Not all Vitamin B12 is the same.

But most supplement labels make it look like it is.

The most commonly used form in low-cost B12 supplements is cyanocobalamin — mainly because it is cheap, stable, and easy to manufacture at scale.

The problem?

It is not the biologically active form your body directly uses.

Active vs Inactive Forms Matter

Your body must first convert cyanocobalamin into active forms of B12 before it can properly support:

  • energy metabolism

  • nervous system function

  • cognitive health

  • cellular function

That conversion process may not be equally efficient for everyone.

That’s why we prefer more bioactive forms like:

  • methylcobalamin

  • adenosylcobalamin

These forms are already closer to the metabolically active versions used inside the body.

In formulation science, the form matters just as much as the dosage.

The “Energy” Marketing Problem

Many B-complex supplements rely on massive doses and long ingredient lists to create the perception of stronger energy support.

But megadosing low-quality forms does not automatically create better outcomes.

More ingredients. More milligrams. More hype.

None of that guarantees better utilization.
